Svanehøj aims for ammonia partnerships in Japan

Last year, Svanehøj Japan moved into larger premises in Kobe to accommodate a growing business and pursue new opportunities. With an installed base of more than 2,000 ammonia-ready marine pumps, Svanehøj now looks to support Japan’s emerging green ammonia business.

Japan has identified green ammonia as an essential strategic component in its ambition to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Several projects are underway to showcase the viability of ammonia as a future marine fuel, emphasizing the need for international collaboration.

With over 2,000 ammonia-ready marine pumps on reference, including nearly 100 fuel pumps, Svanehøj's vast experience in ammonia applications will be a central topic for the company's exhibition at Sea Japan this week – as a part of the Pavilion of Denmark in Hall 2.

- Japan is looking to lead by example in the global energy transition, both in terms of hydrogen and ammonia. It is a great opportunity for us to share our knowledge and experience and help the industry find the right solutions for their projects. We hope to meet future partners at Sea Japan, says Hirohide Gohda, Director of Svanehøj Japan.

Recently, Svanehøj signed a contract with a new Japanese customer to deliver its multigas deepwell pump systems for a new LPG carrier prepared for ammonia cargo and fuel. Svanehøj is increasingly receiving orders of this type. In fact, ammonia-ready cargo pumps make up almost two-thirds of all scheduled tanker orders in 2024.

Expanding in Japan on all parameters

As a specialist in multigas pump solutions for maritime applications, Svanehøj has been working with the Japanese marine industry for more than 20 years. However, since establishing an office in Kobe four years ago, the East Asian business has really taken off.

Today, an experienced team of seven dedicated colleagues works out of the office in Kobe, handling the entire customer experience from initial inquiry to commissioning and ongoing service and aftersales support.

According to Hirohide Gohda, the success derives from in-depth insight into the Japanese market and culture, close partnerships with the local shipyards, and – not least – a range of future-proof fuel and cargo pumps for the ongoing energy transition.

- Japan is a leading shipbuilding nation, and the Japanese market for cryogenic pumps is exceptionally competitive. However, our activities continue to expand on all parameters, driven by an increasing interest in our fuel and cargo pump solutions for LNG and LPG, he adds.
