Largest LPG safety installation to date:

Svanehøj to deliver safety equipment for its 9th LPG cavern storage project in China

With four independent installations across two separate caverns, the Jiangsu Fenghai High-tech Material LPG project stands out as one of Svanehøj’s most complex installations and another significant project reference in the Chinese Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) market.

The Jiangsu Fenghai High-tech Material LPG project involves the construction of an underground cavern facility for butane and propane, as well as critical infrastructure for storage and supply. The principle is to create a secure, pressurized underground space in the excavated rock cavern where the product can be stored safely.

Svanehøj’s scope includes the delivery, installation, and commissioning of a safety solution with emergency shut-off valves for both caverns, designed to mitigate risks in the event of structural instability or hazardous incidents such as emissions or explosions. The valves are installated in strategic locations to mitigate and insulate any hazardous situations, preventing escalation into broader safety or environmental incidents.

The project consists of two caverns, each with two tunnels, resulting in four independent installations. One cavern stores propane, while the other stores butane, and both will be equipped with Svanehøj’s advanced monitoring and safety solutions.

For the project, Svanehøj will supply several key safety and control components, including:

·       24* Emergency Shut-Off Valves (ESVs) which are installed both underground and at ground level to rapidly isolate the system in case of an emergency.

·
1* Level Alarm Probe, critical for detecting high or low product levels and ensuring safe operation by continuously monitoring temperature, water levels and density inside the butane and propane storage caverns.

·
1* Hydraulic Control Panel, positioned at the surface to manage the activation of emergency systems and enable remote operation of the ESVs.

The challenge: designing equipment for safety and redundancy

Ensuring the highest levels of safety and operational redundancy has been at the heart of the Jiangsu project. Due to the nature of underground caverns, often situated around 200 meters below the surface, accessibility post-construction is near impossible, necessitating highly reliable systems at the time of installation that can perform under extreme conditions.

The project will be delivered by Svanehoj France, who are specialists in tailor-made gauging systems for underground LPG storage caverns.

A growing footprint in China

With eight underground LPG cavern safety system installation projects completed in China alone, Svanehøj has built a strong reputation for reliable equipment in critical underground storage.

A key factor in the project has been the collaboration with Key On Gas Equipment Ltd., Svanehøj’s long-term partner in China. Based in Hong Kong and active in the LPG sector for more than 30 years, Key On Gas brings deep market knowledge and facilitates communication in complex multilingual environments.
