Svanehøj to deliver complete gauging systems for the Louisiana LNG Terminal
Bechtel, a leading engineering firm in LNG infrastructure, has selected Svanehøj as the supplier of tank gauging systems for two new large-scale LNG tanks at the Louisiana LNG Terminal, a new liquefaction and export facility under construction on the U.S. Gulf Coast. This landmark project strengthens Svanehøj’s presence in the strategically important LNG market in the US.
Located in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, the Louisiana LNG terminal (formerly known as Driftwood LNG) is developed by Woodside Energy and has been permitted for a total capacity of 27.6 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). It is the first greenfield LNG project to reach a final investment decision in the US since 2023 and represents the largest foreign direct investment in Louisiana’s history. Phase 1, currently underway, encompasses three liquefaction trains and is expected to deliver 16.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with exports set to commence in 2029.
Svanehøj’s involvement in the Louisiana LNG project dates back to 2017, when a preliminary budget offer was submitted to Bechtel during the early stages of project development. The new order for tank gauging systems builds upon a strong history of collaboration between Svanehøj and Bechtel as the EPC contractor, including successful gauging system deliveries for other projects.
- This project is a strong reference for us. Not only are we delivering LTD gauges, but we’re providing the complete system. It proves that our technology is trusted in one of the world’s most competitive LNG markets, says Fabrice Vandewalle, Sales Manager LNG/Cryogenic at Svanehoj France.
Supplying high-precision tank gauging systems
For two newly constructed full-containment LNG storage tanks, Svanehøj will supply a complete, integrated tank gauging system, including:
- Continuous level measurement for real-time monitoring of LNG inventory with high accuracy.
- Average temperature measurement using multiple temperature sensors distributed vertically within the tank.
- LNG density measurement to ensure product quality and facilitate accurate custody transfer.
- Data acquisition system for centralized signal processing and integration with the terminal’s control infrastructure.
- Cabinet, software, and hardware engineered, assembled, and tested at the Svanehoj France subsidiary in Calais.
Svanehøj’s tank safety equipment is designed to meet the specific demands of cryogenic storage, with built-in resilience to temperature cycling, pressure changes, and gas stratification. All components are configured to meet the high-precision requirements for both operational monitoring and fiscal measurement.
The project also follows Svanehøj’s successful deliveries for Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG and Calcasieu Pass LNG terminals, further reinforcing our presence in the Texas-Louisiana region and our role in supporting major U.S. LNG developments.
Building long-term relevance in USA
With construction well underway and an expected operational life of over 40 years, the Louisiana LNG project is set to play a vital role in meeting future energy demands in Europe and Asia.
For Svanehøj, being selected for this important project demonstrates our long-term competitiveness in the U.S. and underlines Svanehøj’s ability to meet the highest technical, commercial, and operational standards even in a market where local competition is strong and expectations are high.
Svanehøj will begin manufacturing in Q1 2026, with final delivery scheduled for Q3 2026. All equipment will be supplied and supported by Svanehoj France in Calais.
