Svanehoj DW Fuel Pumps for 12 new Hapag-Lloyd LnG dual-fuel container ships

Since 2021, Svanehoj has delivered future-proof and highly efficient deepwell LNG fuel pump solutions for Hapag-Lloyd's decarbonization journey. Now, the collaboration continues with DW Fuel Pumps for 12 new LNG dual-fuel container ships.

With decarbonization high on the company agenda, Hapag-Lloyd is accelerating the modernization of its fleet. A key element of the company’s strategy is investment in state-of-the-art container ships, including several LNG-powered dual-fuel ULCVs already in service.

By 2029, an additional 24 dual-fuel newbuildings in varying TEU sizes will enter the fleet, underlining a long-term commitment to cleaner propulsion technologies.

12 of the 24 dual-fuel new vessels – each with the capacity of 16,800 TEU – will be built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group. For this project, Hapag-Lloyd has selected Svanehoj as its fuel pump supplier. In total, the order includes 24 Deepwell (DW) Fuel Pumps, each 24 meters long, designed to serve as low-pressure LNG fuel supply pumps for both main and auxiliary engines.

“Hapag-Lloyd has been a technological frontrunner for years and was among the first to install deepwell pumps on LNG-powered container ships. At Svanehoj, we have been involved from the beginning as a technology partner, and we’re proud to support Hapag-Lloyd’s long-term strategy with our patented DW Fuel Pumps. Hapag-Lloyd’s strong focus on reliability and lifecycle costs aligns very well with our pump technology,” said Marc Poulsen, Assistant Sales Manager, Fuel, at Svanehoj.

Reliability and long-term efficiency

Svanehoj’s DW Fuel Pump was launched in 2016 as the world’s first marine fuel gas pump based on deepwell technology and surpassed 1,500 units sold worldwide last year. Shipowners are increasingly choosing the DW Fuel Pump because it delivers what LNG-powered vessels depend on most: high reliability, maximum uptime, and long-term cost efficiency.

Over the years, the deep well design has proven to be a highly advantageous solution for cryogenic environments, as all sensitive components — including the electric motor, seals, and bearing systems — are located outside the tank, eliminating excess heat and pressure.

Another key feature is the patented foot valve system, which enables complete pump extraction and servicing regardless of tank content or liquid level. This capability enables immediate maintenance without tank emptying, a decisive factor for many operators.

Full-scale lifetime studies have confirmed the pump’s exceptional durability. Servicing is required only every 5 years during scheduled dry-docking, and no access to the fuel tank is needed for maintenance until after 10 years or 50,000 operating hours.
