Built around market needs: Svanehoj expands the NCM engine room pump range

With the first five NCM pump sizes available, Svanehoj has reached a milestone in developing its next-generation engine room pump range. The series now covers around 40-50% of the current market demand, marking the transition from development project to commercially available product range.

The NCM series is a complete redesign of the engine room pump. Rather than making incremental updates, Svanehoj developed a new platform using advanced simulation and performance modeling to optimize efficiency across the entire pump range in various operating conditions.

The NCM series ultimately includes 16 pump sizes, strategically prioritized according to market demand. By releasing the most requested sizes first, Svanehoj has aligned product development closely with customer demands while maintaining flexibility to adapt the roadmap as market needs evolve.

- Our ambition was to create a pump program that strikes the right balance between efficiency, flexibility, and lifecycle cost. One of our design goals was to keep the pumps as simple as possible without compromising performance. With fewer components, shared spare parts, and easier servicing, we create value throughout the vessel's operational life, says Kristian Eis, Engineering and R&D Director, Svanehoj Singapore.

Designed for a broader operating range

A key focus in the development process has been operational efficiency. While many pumps are optimized for a single duty point, the NCM series is designed to maintain high efficiency across a broader operating range. This is becoming increasingly important as vessel operators adopt variable speed drives and other energy-saving technologies to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The result is a pump platform that combines high hydraulic efficiency with the flexibility required for modern vessel operations.

At the same time, simplicity has been a central design principle. The NCM pumps feature a streamlined construction with fewer components and a high degree of commonality across pump sizes. This reduces spare parts requirements, simplifies maintenance procedures, and helps lower total lifecycle costs for operators.

The platform approach also creates manufacturing benefits by enabling larger production batches and greater standardization across the range. This supports both cost efficiency and delivery performance as additional pump sizes are introduced.

Preparing for naval shock qualification

Beyond commercial marine applications, the NCM platform is also being developed with future naval requirements in mind. Svanehoj is pursuing a qualification strategy that will allow a range of customized pump configurations to be pre-qualified for naval shock requirements, reducing lead times, and simplifying project execution for defense customers.

The first five NCM pump sizes are now available, with additional models scheduled for release later this year as the program progresses towards full market coverage in 2027.
