Now 30 vessels: The Svanehoj deepwell pump is a trusted solution for Seaspan’s LNG-fueled container ships

With a new deepwell fuel pump order for five LNG-fueled container ships, Svanehoj further consolidates its position as a trusted partner in Seaspan’s decarbonization journey.

As part of its decarbonization strategy, Seaspan Corporation Pte. Ltd., the world’s largest independent owner and operator of container ships, is continuing to transition its fleet to lower carbon, alternative fueled vessels, and Svanehoj is among the trusted partners supporting the transition.

Most recently, Seaspan partnered with Svanehoj to deliver low-pressure deepwell LNG fuel pumps for five new 16,000 TEU container ships, marking another milestone in the strong collaboration between the two companies. By 2029, Seaspan estimates that one third of its fleet will be alternative fuel powered.

“Svanehoj has been working with Seaspan since 2021. With these additional five vessels, we will have supplied fuel pumps for 30 of Seaspan’s LNG dual-fuel vessels. We stay committed to support them on their continued decarbonization journey,” said Marc Poulsen, Assistant Sales Manager, Fuel, at Svanehoj.

The partnership between the two companies is grounded in a shared ambition to drive the transition towards cleaner shipping. Seaspan’s perspective underlines why Svanehoj has become a trusted technology partner, emphasizing reliability, safety, and proven performance:

“In our quest for reducing carbon emissions, we have partnered with Svanehoj for the supply of the low-pressure deepwell pumps since the very first vessel of our dual-fueled series. Given the high profile of these ships, the complexity of the fuel system installation, the cryogenic environment, and elevated safety standards, Seaspan sought a sound, proven, and reliable partner. We selected Svanehoj equipment for its operational track record of achieving uninterrupted services to its customers,” said Daniel Gherasim, Director Fleet Engineering, at Seaspan Corporation Pte. Ltd.

Each vessel will feature two 25-meter deepwell fuel pumps and Svanehoj control panels. Deliveries are expected to commence in Q2 2026.

Robust design, proven reliability, and long service intervals

Since introducing the Deepwell (DW) Fuel Pump for liquefied gas in 2016, Svanehoj has equipped hundreds of vessels, from LPG-, LNG-, and P&C carriers to cruise ships, PCTCs, and container vessels. Last year, Svanehoj reached the significant milestone of 1,000 fuel pumps sold.

Shipowners are increasingly turning to Svanehoj’s patented DW fuel pumps for several reasons — most notably their robust design, proven reliability, and long service intervals. Full-scale lifetime studies have documented the design’s exceptional durability: servicing is required only every five years during regular docking, and no tank access is needed for maintenance until after 10 years or 50,000 operating hours.

Over the years, Svanehoj’s deepwell pump design has proven to be a highly advantageous solution for cryogenic environments, as all sensitive components — including the electric motor, seals, and bearing systems — are located outside the tank, eliminating excess heat and pressure. Another key feature is the patented foot valve system, which enables complete pump extraction and servicing regardless of tank content or liquid level. This capability allows for immediate maintenance without tank emptying — a decisive factor for many operators.
