Svanehoj deepwell pumps in operation at the EU’s first full-scale CO₂ storage site

The inauguration of INEOS’ Project Greensand marks a significant milestone for carbon capture and storage in Europe. Svanehoj has supplied specialized deepwell cargo CO₂ pumps for both the onshore facility at Port Esbjerg and the project’s first dedicated LCO₂ carrier.

On 18 September 2026, His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark officially inaugurated the EU’s first full-scale CO₂ storage site in operation at the First Carbon Chain event in Esbjerg, Denmark.

The inauguration marks an important step towards establishing commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure in Europe, with Svanehoj technology supporting critical stages of the CO₂ value chain.

Supporting CO₂ handling and transportation

As part of INEOS’ Project Greensand, Svanehoj has supplied deepwell cargo CO₂ pumps for both the onshore facility at Port Esbjerg and the project’s first dedicated liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) carrier.

The pumps support two critical stages of the CCS value chain: handling captured and liquefied CO₂ at the terminal and transferring it onboard the vessel for transportation to the permanent storage site beneath the Danish North Sea.

Building on decades of CO₂ pumping experience

Svanehoj’s involvement in Project Greensand builds on more than three decades of experience in CO₂ pumping systems.

The company delivered its first deepwell cargo pump solution for an LCO₂ carrier in the 1990s and is today supplying critical pumping equipment for major CCS projects, including Northern Lights in Norway and some of the world’s largest LCO₂ carriers currently under construction.

With Project Greensand now in operation, Svanehoj continues to contribute specialized pumping technology to the development of Europe’s emerging CCS infrastructure, supporting the handling and transportation of captured CO₂ for permanent geological storage.
