ESG in progress: Optimizing pipe testing saves 225,000 liters of water a year
At Svanehøj, our commitment to sustainability goes hand-in-hand with optimizing our production processes. A good example of this is the recent remodeling of our production facilities, where we have taken two significant steps in the manufacturing of caisson pipes.
A key improvement in our production facilities has been the way we conduct pressure testing of our caisson pipes. Previously, pressure testing a caisson pipe consumed hundreds of liters of tap water that was afterwards poured into the sewer. Now, thanks to a custom-built water recycling system from pallet tanks, we reuse the same water across multiple tests. Based on our manufacturing volume in 2023, we will save at least 225,000 liters of water per year. This system also allows us to reduce filling time by 30-45 minutes per pipe test.
By redesigning our factory setup and reorganizing the production flow, we have seen a derived effect in transportation of pipes. We have managed to cut down the internal transport of caisson pipes by nearly 60%, meaning that we have eliminated nearly 0.5 km of unnecessary transport of pipes per batch, while simultaneously freeing up time for our workforce.
These two advancements reflect our broader ESG-strategy, “Engage to Sustain”, where every team member is empowered to drive a positive change.
“Our ongoing focus on ESG is the driving force behind such initiatives. While water isn’t a scarce resource as such in Denmark, we believe in making conscious choices to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. It’s not about cutting costs, it’s about doing better for the sake of our environment”, said Mikkel Bülow Bundgaard Sørensen, Head of Production.
At Svanehøj, we take pride in our progress and are excited to continue innovating in our efforts to power a better future.
